Totally agree on omegas, and I’ll add a few “sleeper” nutrients that moved the needle for me. Protein quality and sulfur amino acids (methionine/cystine) are huge-better-digestible, animal-first diets gave my dogs denser, glossier coat within 6-8 weeks. Don’t overlook linoleic acid (an omega-6) from named animal fats; low LA = dry, flaky coat even if everything else looks fine. Balance that with marine EPA/DHA (dogs barely convert flax ALA), but get a vet-approved dose rather than guessing. Trace minerals matter too-zinc and copper in bioavailable forms (e.g., proteinate/chelate) support the hair shaft; I’d avoid DIY zinc supplements unless a vet flags a deficiency.
If shedding seems “excessive,” nutrition only goes so far-rule out itch triggers and medicals: fleas/mites, hypothyroidism, and especially atopy/food response (an 8-12 week elimination diet did more for a friend’s lab than any brush). Hydration helped here as well (adding moisture/wet food), and a targeted probiotic trial modestly improved coat and dander. Practical checklist I use: AAFCO complete, WSAVA-style manufacturer transparency, high digestibility, named animal fat for linoleic acid, marine omega-3s, no megadosing fat-soluble vitamins. Diet won’t stop seasonal coat blows, but it can turn tumbleweeds into manageable fluff.
